Memorial Day & Arlington National Cemetery

Memorial Day & Arlington National Cemetery

Posted by Joel Kneedler on

Arlington National Cemetery is a famous burial ground for American military members who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.

Where is it?

Located in Washington D.C., just across the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial, is Arlington National Cemetery. Covering 639 acres, Arlington is the final resting place for 400,000 soldiers, airmen, sailors, marines—along with a handful of foreign nationals—who have “served our nation with dignity and honor.”

Who is buried there?

In addition to service members, many famous names are also buried at Arlington, like former President John F. Kennedy, Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren, and famous African American soldiers and freedom fighters like Medgar Evers.

A number of Hollywood actors who served during WWII are also buried at Arlington, including: Audie Murphy (The Red Badge of Courage), Lee Marvin (The Dirty Dozen), and Charles Durning (Tootsie).

What is The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier?

During the Memorial Day weekend, all eyes turn to the most famous gravesite of all, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Built in 1921, The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier holds a prominent, hallowed position at Arlington. It serves as an ever-present reminder of all the fallen troops who have never been identified.

Three crypts are guarded, rain or shine, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, by the Army’s 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as The Old Guard.

Every year on Memorial Day, the current president of the United States will hold a televised, formal wreath-laying ceremony at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
